January Ocean Night – Oil on Ice & Campaign 2

Join us for this month’s Ocean Night on January 11! We will be screening Oil on Ice, a film about the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and it’s long, controversial battle with resource extraction. Plus Campaign 2, the highly anticipated sequel to Taylor Steele’s best-selling surf flick.

$3 suggested donation for films (free to Northcoast Environmental Center and Surfrider members). As always, there will be an awesome raffle!

“Oil on Ice is a vivid, compelling and comprehensive documentary connecting the fate of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to energy policy, transportation choices, and other seemingly unrelated matters. Caught in the balance are the culture and livelihood of the Gwich’in people and the migratory wildlife in this fragile ecosystem.” – Oil on Ice website

“Campaign 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the best selling movie Campaign showcases Andy and Bruce Irons tearing apart a new right in Bali, Shane Dorian exploring Morocco, Dane Reynolds going off in the Mentawis, Taj boosting in Mexico, and Kelly Slater’s “best day of surfing ever” deep in Caribbean pits. C2 was filmed in the USA, Australia, Indonesia, France, Africa, and the Caribbean.”

October Ocean Night – Thicker Than Water and Straws

Join us for October Ocean Night!

This month we will be featuring; Thicker Than Water, and Straws, as well as celebrating a successful Coastal Cleanup Day!

Thicker Than Water is a collection of images and memories that started with the first time we stood on the deck of a surfboard and ends with an eighteen- month journey through the North Atlantic, South Pacific and the Bay of Bengal.
Starring: Rob Machado, Kelly Slater, Brad Gerlach, Shane Dorian, The Malloy Brothers, and others.

Straws: It’s estimated that each day in the U.S., over 500,000,000 straws are used once and tossed. Ocean Conservancy ranks plastic straws as the number five most popular found item on beaches and the vast majority of them aren’t recycled, so they wind up in landfills, litter streets and add to the estimated 8.5 metric tons of plastic debris in oceans annually.

September Ocean Night – September Sessions and Smog of The Sea

September Sessions: By September of 1999, Slater was eager to escape and find perfect waves where he could push his surfing to new levels without the restrictions of competition. So he took off to Sumatra, Indonesia, along with some friends, to fulfill that long awaited dream. Knowing full well something extraordinary could happen on a mission of this sort, Kelly asked Jack to come along, and Johnson brought the same 25-year old camera he’d used during the filming of Thicker Than Water, which had just been released. New levels of strength of purity were reached as Slater and friends pushed their surfing to limits that have yet to be matched.

The Smog of the Sea chronicles a 1-week journey through the remote waters of the Sargasso Sea. Marine scientist Marcus Eriksen invited onboard an unusual crew to help him study the sea: renowned surfers Keith & Dan Malloy, musician Jack Johnson, spearfisher woman Kimi Werner, and bodysurfer Mark Cunningham become citizen scientists on a mission to assess the fate of plastics in the world’s oceans.

Dulce: A short documentary surf film that takes a fresh look at Pavones – both the wave that made it famous and other nearby gems. Spanning six months of swell, the film explores the beautiful, crusty, pure, and at times quirky lives of surfers reveling in Nature at the end of the road, and how those lifestyles may now be subject to change in the face of development.Featuring the surfing, music, and thoughts from a cast of locals, international transplants and travelers – Dulce is a no-budget treat that reminds us how deeply we owe the Ocean and where to go from here.

The Weekend Sailor: In 1973, with almost no experience, Mexican captain Ramon Carlin raced against the superstars of sailing in a 9 month deadly round the world regatta winning the overall prize.

June 8th Ocean Night – Trinidad School and Castles in the Sky

Doors 6:30pm Films 7pm
All Ages
$3 Suggested Donation

This month we are pleased to feature films and presentations by Trinidad School students and teachers and an all time favorite surf flim, Castles In The Sky!

Trinidad School at Ocean Night
Trinidad School students immerse themselves in the water world. Students embark on a journey through a marine habitat every year in May through a whole school immersion program called M.AR.E. Marine Activities, Resource Education is an inquiry- based science program developed by Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science.

During the month of May- otherwise known as Ocean Month, students learn about their class’ ocean habitat, doing inquiry- based projects and activities, and exploring on field trips. Presentations at Ocean Night will include some of Trinidad kids’ projects such as, the Salmon Trash Art project to raise awareness about the Klamath’s salmon, a citizen science project with HSU’s marine lab to monitor sea star wasting disease, a student film about Trinidad’s CCNM and we’ll also honor our surf club groms!
Castles In The Sky:
Filmed in five countries over three years, the documentary delves into the heart of the locations while the surfers travel through them with a sense of open-minded awe. With never-before seen waves and some of the best surfers in the world contributing their art, passion and athleticism, this is as close to the experience of pioneering new coastlines as you can get without getting on a plane.
