The Humboldt Bay Social Club is happy to have everyone bring food to the event, but NOT booze. The Lobby Bar will be serving beer, wine, and cocktails for purchase. 10% of proceeds benefit the Surfrider Foundation and our Water Quality Conference this fall.
If you are bringing a personal picnic, or food to grill and share, you might also want to think about bringing reusable utensils, plates, etc. We’d like to make this a zero waste event.
Join us for June’s Ocean Night at Arcata Theater Lounge! This month we are screening Vey Nou Lagon and The Fisherman’s Son, plus a local Lifeguard presentation.
Thursday, June 7. Doors
Doors open at 6:30pm, films from 7-9pm
“Vey nou Lagon is an inspirational film that follows a traditional artisanal fisherman and his family as they tell us the story of the Mauritian lagoons and show us the current state of the ocean. Vey nou Lagon highlights the local heroes and success stories of Mauritius and Rodrigues, an autonomous outer island of Mauritius. Fishermen from the two islands provide solutions and inspire others to take simple actions at the individual level to make a difference.”
The Fisherman’s Son highlights Ramón Navarro, who “found a voice through big wave surfing. One wave enabled him to make a lasting difference in his hometown, Punta de Lobos, Chile. Because of Ramon and other passionate individuals, that coast, it’s waves, fish and abundant resources for the local way of life, has been preserved.”
There will also be a presentation on local lifeguarding, including a discussion on the local Junior Guards program and a seasonal summer life guard program for patrolling the State Park beaches.
As always, there will be a wonderful raffle! $3 suggested donation and free to Surfrider/NEC/Baykeeper members. All proceeds go to Humboldt Surfrider, the NEC, and Humboldt Baykeeper.
We are doing a River Night takeover of Ocean Night Thursday April 12th.
There will be some great raffle prizes including: a rescue life jacket donated by Kokatat, a backpack donated by Adventures Edge, and North Coast whitewater kayaking guidebook donated by author Dan Menten and Surfrider.
We will be showing Oil + Water a fun and educational movie about two whitewater kayakers who drive the entire west coast of North and South America in a biodiesel fire truck. During their trip, they kayak rivers and educate folks about converting and driving biodiesel vehicles. Trailer https://vimeo.com/89207317
We will also be showing some of Dan Menten’s local whitewater videos (here is an example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGf5Vjxae_0).

Surfrider Foundation is an environmental non-profit dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves and beaches.
In our quarterly meeting, the Humboldt executive committee and local Surfrider members will be discussing opportunities to volunteer and get involved in projects to protect our oceans, waves, and beaches.
We will also be rolling out our new and revamped version of the Samoa Trash Bash, an interactive beach clean-up campaign that you can participate in ANYTIME and win monthly prizes! Stay tuned!
Can’t wait to see you all there! First beer is on us (while supplies last) so come early!
Join us for this month’s Ocean Night on January 11! We will be screening Oil on Ice, a film about the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and it’s long, controversial battle with resource extraction. Plus Campaign 2, the highly anticipated sequel to Taylor Steele’s best-selling surf flick.
$3 suggested donation for films (free to Northcoast Environmental Center and Surfrider members). As always, there will be an awesome raffle!
“Oil on Ice is a vivid, compelling and comprehensive documentary connecting the fate of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to energy policy, transportation choices, and other seemingly unrelated matters. Caught in the balance are the culture and livelihood of the Gwich’in people and the migratory wildlife in this fragile ecosystem.” – Oil on Ice website
“Campaign 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the best selling movie Campaign showcases Andy and Bruce Irons tearing apart a new right in Bali, Shane Dorian exploring Morocco, Dane Reynolds going off in the Mentawis, Taj boosting in Mexico, and Kelly Slater’s “best day of surfing ever” deep in Caribbean pits. C2 was filmed in the USA, Australia, Indonesia, France, Africa, and the Caribbean.”

Under an Arctic Sky: Six surfers set sail along the frozen shores of Iceland, knowing that the worst storm to hit the country in twenty-five years is about to arrive. Enduring constant darkness and stormy seas, they discover perfect waves and make history by surfing under the northern lights.
Chasing Coral: Coral reefs around the world are vanishing at an unprecedented rate. A team of divers, photographers and scientists set out on a thrilling ocean adventure to discover why and to reveal the underwater mystery to the world.
Thicker Than Water is a collection of images and memories that started with the first time we stood on the deck of a surfboard and ends with an eighteen- month journey through the North Atlantic, South Pacific and the Bay of Bengal.
Starring: Rob Machado, Kelly Slater, Brad Gerlach, Shane Dorian, The Malloy Brothers, and others.
Straws: It’s estimated that each day in the U.S., over 500,000,000 straws are used once and tossed. Ocean Conservancy ranks plastic straws as the number five most popular found item on beaches and the vast majority of them aren’t recycled, so they wind up in landfills, litter streets and add to the estimated 8.5 metric tons of plastic debris in oceans annually.
