Protect Humboldt Bay & Stinky's - Ensure Eureka's Wastewater Meets Minimum Requirements

Protect Humboldt Bay & Stinky's - Ensure Eureka's Wastewater Meets Minimum Requirements

Tell the Regional Water Board to deny the "Elk River Restoration Project as an Exception to the Enclosed Bays and Estuaries Policy Prohibiting Waste Discharges to Humboldt Bay for the Elk River Wastewater Treatment Plant."

The City of Eureka’s wastewater discharge has been found to remain in Humboldt Bay, which is illegal under the “Enclosed Bays and Estuaries Policy.”  Now, the city is seeking approval from the Regional Water Board for an exemption from that policy to continue what they've been doing instead of addressing the problem.

We are asking the Regional Water Board to deny this permit until Eureka meets all the minimum criteria to be considered for exemption and a public workshop is held to allow stakeholders to weigh in on this decision.

Currently, Eureka meets less than half the minimum criteria to be considered for this exemption. Further, approval of an exemption at this time is inappropriate because it predetermines an outcome without any evidence that beneficial uses such as surfing, fishing, and kayaking will be protected.

Make your voice heard by telling the Regional Water Board to deny the permit today! Submit comments to: NorthCoast@waterboards.ca.gov
