Dec. 1 meeting and more

The Humboldt Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation meets Monday, Dec. 1 at 6 p.m. in Plaza Grill's View Room – we'd love to see you there!

Based on feedback from the very successful Shindig in October, we've taken steps on some issues and prioritized others. Here's some of what we've been doing so far:

1. Jetty shower. We're working with Miller Farms and BLM to find the source of the problem – and then fix it. Progress has been somewhat slow, but steady.

2. Concrete/styrofoam/fiberglass blocks. As many have noticed, numerous former dock floats have washed up on shore from the North Jetty to Stone Lagoon. We've talked with Humboldt Bay Harbor, Recreation and Conservation District CEO Dave Hull, plus Bay Commissioner Mike Wilson, about the problem and are currently attempting to both track down the responsible party and ascertain how Surfrider Humboldt can best help make sure the blocks are removed. They pose a serious environmental threat, so the sooner, the better. Also, if you see any of these blocks, let us know – we're collecting data on locations to help inventory how many are out there.

3. A wave energy forum is being planned for February and a water quality one (co-sponsored with Humboldt Baykeeper) for April.

4. Moonstone shower. This is a large-scale project, but we have had some good feedback from people interested in helping make a Glenn Stockwell Memorial shower/surf rack at Moonstone a reality.

We'll talk more about all this and other issues at hand Monday night. You can also tune into KHUM 104.3 FM's Coastal Currents on Wednesday, Nov. 26 at noon. Vice Chair Jennifer Savage will join Mike Dronkers to talk about what's happening with Surfrider in Humboldt County.

If you missed the Shindig or missed getting a T-shirt with the new Matt O'Brien-designed logo, Monty's stocking them at Greenhouse now. (Sweet new store location is on Eighth Street in Arcata, next to Rita's by the Post Office.) If your size isn't available, let us know at humboldt@surfrider.org. We're making a list for our next order!

Finally, SoHum band The NPK has offered to donate proceeds from one of their upcoming Arcata shows to us! We'll send a separate missive out when we have all the details.

Looking forward to seeing you Monday, Dec. 1 at 6 p.m. at the Plaza Grill View Room. If you have any questions, concerns or issues you would like added to our agenda in advance, please email humboldt@surfrider.org.
