Beach Cleanup Coordinator

The Surfrider Foundation is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves, and beaches, for all people, through a powerful activist network. 

The Beach Cleanup Coordinator (BCC) is an internship position. The BCC will work with the Executive Committee and our team of volunteers to organize, promote, and host beach cleanups along the Humboldt County coast. The goal of these projects is to help protect our ocean and local beaches from the negative impacts of pollution and other hazards that affect the health of the marine environment.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Organize monthly beach cleanups
  • Manage the cleanup schedule and calendar 
  • Work with media & communications team to promote cleanup events
  • Communicate with volunteers before, during, and after events
  • Set up and manage Surfrider tent/table and equipment at cleanup sites
  • Solicit donations for volunteers (snacks, beverages, raffle prizes, etc.)
  • Attend Surfrider meetings 

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to remain flexible and prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Familiarity with ocean conservation, environmental issues, community organizing, and grassroots activism (or willingness to learn) 

Hours per week will vary, but we are happy to accommodate academic schedules and university internship requirements. Surfrider Foundation is an approved Cal Poly Humboldt community partner organization so course credit may be available.
