Join Humboldt Baykeeper, Ocean Conservancy and Humboldt Surfrider on Thursday, April 5 at 6:30 p.m. for the premiere of the new award-winning surf documentary Splinters and an in-depth look at ocean protection during Ocean Night at the Arcata Theatre Lounge.
First, California's Sea Change: A Network of Hope Spots. “Hope Spots” are special ocean places that are cause for hope in a time when the ocean faces many threats. In California’s Sea Change, marine biologist and ocean explorer Sylvia Earle discusses how California's growing network of marine protected areas are a cause for hope. Following, Ocean Conservancy’s North Coast Coordinator Jennifer Savage will present a brief visual tour of proposed Mendocino, Humboldt and Del Norte marine protected areas.
Splinters, praised by ESPN for “reviving the surf film genre,” combines great on-wave action with high drama. Restricted by gender, culture and limited jobs, a unique group of athletes contests for a national championship as a ticket off the paradise of Papua New Guinea. A standout on the festival circuit since its Tribeca premiere, Filmmaker Magazine has called Splinters “engrossing and endlessly surprising.”
Ocean Night is an all-ages event. (Note: Splinters does contain some violence.) A donation of $3 is requested at the door. Films start at 7 p.m. A raffle takes place after the second movie.
