Ocean Night, Thursday, March 8: Loose Change

Join Ocean Conservancy, Humboldt Surfrider and Humboldt Baykeeper, Thursday, March 8 in the Arcata Theatre Lounge for Ocean Night. This month's films are the PBS special Salmon: Running the Gauntlet and Taylor Steele's surf classic, Loose Change. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the movies start at 7 p.m. Ocean Night is all-ages with a $3 donation requested.

Salmon: Running the Gauntlet investigates the parallel stories of collapsing Pacific salmon populations and how biologists and engineers have become instruments in audacious experiments to replicate every stage of the fish’s life cycle. Each desperate effort to save salmon has involved replacing their natural cycle of reproduction and death with a radically manipulated life history. Once great runs of salmon are now conceived in laboratories, raised in tanks, driven in trucks and farmed in pens. In its exposure of a wildly creative, hopelessly complex and stunningly expensive approach to managing salmon, the film reveals one of the most ambitious plans ever conceived for taking the reins of the planet.

In Loose Change, acclaimed director Taylor Steele asks "What if the top pro surfers never started surfing?" The answers are as amusing as the surfing is amazing. Loose Change stars Rob Machado, Shane Dorian, Kelly Slater, Taylor Knox, Tim Curran, Dan Malloy, Chris Malloy, Keith Malloy, Kalani Rob, Conan Hayes, Bruce Irons and Taj Burrow.
