Sonic Sea: Oceans are a sonic symphony. Sound is essential to the survival and prosperity of marine life.SONIC SEA travels beneath the ocean’s surface to uncover the damaging consequences of increased ocean noise pollution and what can be done to stop it. Narrated by Academy Award-nominated actress Rachel McAdams and featuring interviews with marine ecologists, ocean life experts, and wildlife activists, including Grammy-Award winning musician, human rights and environmental activist Sting, SONIC SEA highlights how noise from a range of man-made sources has affected whales in recent years, including the mass stranding of whales around the planet. The film uncovers how better ship design, speed limits for large ships, quieter methods for underwater resource exploration, and exclusion zones for sonar training can work to reduce the noise in our oceans and stop the deaths of our ocean’s beloved creatures, as long as society has “the political will to solve it.”

Frio: A crowd-funded Kickstarter documentary, is a heartwarming film about two up and coming Nicaraguan surfers, Kevin Cortez and Jackson Obando. The two are longtime childhood friends and simultaneously podium rivals who embark on a surf trip that is one of the first of it’s kind; from tropical to icy waters. However, suiting up head-to-toe in a full body wetsuit to brave the frigid waters of British Columbia, Canada is not the only ‘first’ these young prodigies are destined to confront. From the moment they say goodbye to their families and step on to the plane they begin to learn the meaning of the term ‘culture shock’. The documentary is both endearing and at times even comical, as the film crew does it’s best to capture their childlike curiosity as well as every life changing moment, from the good to the bad.

We will also be screening “The Zone” and “Thule Tuvalu.”

A past resident of Arcata and Shelter Cove, Michael Kew is an editorial freelance writer who first became involved in magazine publishing when he was 12. Kew’s work has been featured extensively worldwide in magazines, newspapers, websites, commercials, and books, including 2012’s “Crossings,” his collection of travel writing. In May 2016, “Crossings” was redesigned and reissued in softcover, hardcover, and ebook formats. Kew’s second travel book is slated for 2018. He will publish his first photo book in late 2016. He lives on the southern Oregon coast.
Thule Tuvalu:
Two places at the edge of our planet are making headlines due to climate change: Thule, Greenland, because of record ice melts there; and Tuvalu, because this remote Pacific island nation is one of the first countries on the verge of sinking as a result of rising sea levels. Whereas for us the warming of the planet occurs almost solely in the media, it is changing the entire existence for the inhabitants of Thule and Tuvalu. The film portrays how they are forced to abandon their traditional way of life as they move towards an unknown future.

female surfers in the media. Including interviews with
top female athletes and awe-inspiring big wave surf
footage filmed in the icy waters of Ocean Beach,
San Francisco and Mavericks – one of the biggest
waves on the planet – this film empowers a new
generation of girls to live their dreams and overcome
the challenges they face along the way.

Surfrider Gathering – South Beach User Conflict

Surfrider is calling a special meeting to address the conflict revolving around TRICK Jet Ski usage (NOT tow) at South Beach in Crescent City, CA. Please attend the meeting as we will discuss the issue and start to formulate a plan to help ensure South Beach is safe and enjoyable for all!

The purpose of this meeting is to have an informative discussion. The ultimate goal is to maximize all public recreational uses of South Beach. ar121875642516001

When: Thursday August 11th, 7pm -9pm
Where: The Neighborhood, 1925 Alliance Rd, Arcata, California 95521
Who: Everyone! Members and non-members welcome

Many of us have learned to surf, taught our kids to surf, or just spent a day enjoying the sand and scenery at beautiful South Beach. Recently, the Crescent City Surfrider chapter and beach users in the area have reached out to us for help. Some recreational Jet Ski riders have been reported to be exceeding their legal allowed activity at South Beach. There have been many complaints that surfers, swimmers, and beachgoers now feel unsafe and unwelcome. Our goal is to help find a solution that keeps this portion of coastline safe and accessible for all types of public use.
If you care about South Beach and want to help, or have ideas and input about this issue, please come and participate in our Surfrider Gathering. Everyone is welcome to attend!

Refreshments will be provided. Bring a treat to share if you like! Members and non-members welcome.

Special thanks to the Neighborhood for hosting!

In celebration of the films 50th anniversay, we just have to show this all time classic!

From the uncharted waters of West Africa, to the shark-filled seas of Australia, to the tropical paradise of Tahiti and beyond, these California surfers accomplish in a few months what most people never do in a lifetime… They live their dream.

Director Bruce Brown creates a film so powerful it has become a timeless masterpiece that continues to capture the imagination of every new generation. When it first played in theaters, audiences lined up to see it again and again, spellbound by its thrilling excitement and awesome photography. But in fact, what’s most compelling about the film is the sport of surfing itself, and once you’ve seen it, you ll never forget why.
